Document Downloads API #159135

Description

@mariomadproductions

Documentation

It seems like the existence of the Downloads API is not documented, other than by its presence in the source code.

I think it'd be a good idea to document its existence somewhere on the site itself, probably under an "API" link in the index on the bottom of each page? Since I think that's what most people would expect, from how other sites do it, and there have been issue(s) in the past with APIs being forgotten about and stopping working.

(note: I opened this here before, but it was closed, I guess because docs issues are meant to go here?).

    The Python documentation, however, is not the place for this. I’m also not sure why the pythondotorg issue was closed, I’d suggest asking there.

    The 'Downloads API' link go nowhere. Wherever you end up, link to the actual source code you claim exists in whichever repository.

    The TOC for each version has Download the documentation. This would be the appropriate place. Whether our this page can be indexed depends on how it is constructed.

    @hugovk Do you know how download.html is constructed? I did not find a download.rst in Doc/.

    They're talking about the API for downloading Python (not the documentation) from what I understand, so I don't think that should be in the documentation for Python.

    The page is constructed from a HTML template: https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/main/Doc/tools/templates/download.html

    And sorry, I forgot to comment earlier, the referenced file has moved to: https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/blob/main/apps/downloads/api.py

    Thanks. I'll keep this to the python website issue tracker then.
