We have an internal helper function that unfortunately is public.

To simplify further refactorings we want to move the internal helper into a detailed namespace and add some constraints to it

detail::InternalLoadDirectBlockedVectorized now always assumes it is properly aligned and the responsibility for that lies with LoadDirectBlockedVectorized

This gives us the flexibility to refactor this further to allow wider loads in the future.

It also fixes a minor issue in the old InternalLoadDirectBlockedVectorized where we would silently drop the CacheLoadModifier in the fallback path

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved vectorized block and warp loads to check memory alignment before using vectorized access, falling back to direct loads when alignment is insufficient.
    • Preserved cache-modifier behavior when loading from cache-modified iterators, including when direct-load fallback is needed.
    • Expanded support for safely determining when contiguous inputs are eligible for vectorized loading.

The vectorized load helper now checks iterator eligibility and pointer alignment, and supports cache-load modifiers. BlockLoad and WarpLoad use the updated API. The alignment test includes a cache-modified input.

Changes: Vectorized load path

Layer / File(s) Summary
Eligibility and vectorized load API
cub/cub/block/block_load.cuh
Adds shared eligibility checks and a modifier-aware loader. Aligned pointers use vector loads; misaligned pointers use direct loads, with the cache modifier preserved for non-default modifiers. The prior internal entry point remains as a deprecated wrapper.
Block and warp loader integration
cub/cub/block/block_load.cuh, cub/cub/warp/warp_load.cuh, cub/test/catch2_test_block_load.cu
BlockLoad and WarpLoad call the updated helper. The alignment test adds a CacheModifiedInputIterator case.

Possibly related issues

  • NVIDIA/cccl issue 12170: The change separates aligned vector loads from the misaligned fallback, but does not add the issue’s striped vectorized load.
  • NVIDIA/cccl issue 12162: The change refactors InternalLoadDirectBlockedVectorized, but does not change BlockStore.

Suggested reviewers: bernhardmgruber, gevtushenko, davebayer

Priority: Normal

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to fa6a6

The fallback retains its cache modifier. The remaining concern is regression-test coverage, not a current behavioral defect.

suggestion: Check the fallback load instruction, not only output values.

Offsets 1–3 reach the misaligned fallback. REQUIRE(d_input == d_output) checks only loaded values, so it also passes if the fallback uses LOAD_DEFAULT. Add a branch-specific PTX or code-generation assertion to detect whether the fallback retains LOAD_LDG.

🔬 Benchmark SASS comparison

⚠️ The SASS changed for 2 of 100 CUB and 0 of 75 Thrust benchmark target(s). A benchmark run may be necessary

How to request a benchmark run
Request a benchmark run for this PR:

1. Replace the `benchmarks:` block of ci/bench.yaml with exactly this:

benchmarks:
  filters:
    cpp:
      - '^cub\.bench\.topk\.keys\.base$'
      - '^cub\.bench\.topk\.pairs\.base$'
  gpus:
    - "h100" # pick the GPUs that this change can affect

2. Commit with `[bench-only]` at the end of the commit summary, so that
the unrelated CI jobs are skipped. Then push.

ci/bench.yaml must match ci/bench.template.yaml before the PR can merge.
Reset it once the measurement is done.

I do wonder which part of this PR causes the TopK SASS change. If it stays, I think we need a benchmark.

Inspect the generated SASS comparison for the CUB vectorized load changes in cub/cub/block/block_load.cuh and cub/cub/warp/warp_load.cuh, focusing on vector memory operations, cache modifiers, alignment fallbacks, control flow, registers, and spills. Reproduce narrowly by regenerating the relevant CUB SASS diff and running the focused block/warp load validation. If the machine-code changes are unintended, correct the implementation and tests and rerun the comparison; if they are expected, make no code-only workaround and have an authorized maintainer approve this exact commit with `/sass diff ok fa6a6d1c2708111fb0c9b419026aa4105793f049`.

This is the only functional change, because we were previously dropping the load modifier on the ground

According to Claude what is affecting TopK is not any load modifier (none used), but

  • the additional new __runtime_assume_aligned() (it seems to save a few instructions)
  • for I128 specifically ipt is 1 and the compiler seems to struggle with the branches doing the same thing. This seems to add instructions. Claude recommends
    if (alignof(vector_t) <= alignof(T) || ::cuda::std::is_sufficiently_aligned<alignof(vector_t)>(block_src_ptr))

Other algorithms are simply not affected because they do not use the vectorized policy.
